Chapter 21

Stephanie

It took me nearly a minute to come up with something to say, and during that time, I did nothing but stare at Ryan with my mouth hanging open and my eyes wide as saucers. What I finally did manage to spit out wasn’t all that impressive, either.

“You’re really my dad?” For how long it took me to find the words, they felt pretty lame when they stumbled out of my mouth.

He smiled. “I am really your father. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you right away, and I’m even more sorry that I couldn’t fill you in on everything when we first spoke online. It was just too dangerous. There was too much at stake.”

I shook my head, not so much looking for an apology from him as an explanation. “But—how did this happen? How did you find me?” Of course, the more pressing question on my mind was why had he and my mother given me up in the first place, but I figured I could work up to asking that one. I needed a little more time to process before I dove into the deep end of my family trauma.

He cleared his throat and came back over to the cot. He put his arm out for me to take. “If you’re feeling well enough, why don’t we go sit down at the table in the other room so that I can make us some tea? You might not need any, but I sure as hell do.”

With some hesitation, I reached out and put some of my weight into his arm and got back to my feet. He helped me to the door and we stepped outside into the living room/kitchen area of his basement apartment. The light was a little brighter in this room, although not much, and it smelled like floral candles and burned coffee. We walked together to the small, round table in the middle of the room, and I lowered myself down in one of the mismatched chairs. Ryan then went to the stove and snatched the kettle.

“Now then,” he said as he went about filling it with fresh water. “Where should I begin? You wanted to know how I found you. Well that was really just a happy accident.”

“You mean you weren’t looking for me?” I didn’t mean for the emotion to be so raw in my voice, but there was no taking it back now. Ryan looked at me with a pitiful glance and that made me want to slap him across the face. If he wasn’t my father, I might’ve.

“That came out wrong,” he said awkwardly. “I would’ve been looking for you. I would’ve been scouring the earth to find you if… If I had known you even existed before about six months ago.”

“What?” I balked. “You mean you never knew I was born?”

“No.” He shook his head. “Not until recently.” He put the kettle on the stove top and turned the burner on high, then came to sit down next to me and folded his hands neatly on the table in front of him.
